Commonhold was intended as a new model of ownership, to replace leasehold for residential owners. Yet is has spectacularly failed to take off.

The main reasons for this are known: a lack of support from funders - very few will lend against commonhold properties; and few incentives for developers.  

Combined with the Government's proposed changes to leaseholds, which you can read about here, the Law Commission has launched an 8 week consultation process. The consultation seeks to canvass views on why the current system doesn't work.

Since the Commonhold act came into force in 2004, only 20 commonhold developments have been created - with just one in London, and one in Manchester.
