Community Land Trusts - a solution to the housing crisis?
05/03/19Community land trusts (or "CLTs") are community-led, not-for-private-profits. They are led by local people, who have a vested interest in the long term success of new communities and local employment opportunities.
CLTs have a number of key advantages:
- Prioritising the community means that their main incentive isn’t profit - allowing development of smaller schemes that may not stack up for commercial developers
- Delivery of affordable homes as a core aim
- Local employement opportunities
- Community engagement means that local support is much more likely - assisting with the planning process
CLTs are, for now, likely to focus on delivery of smaller development sites, but they can be a great way of getting affordable housing on smaller sites, including in rural areas.
We are advising a number of CLTs on their innovative development proposals - contact us for more information.
