The remaining members of the non-mayoral North East Combined Authority will continue to exist with members from Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.

The mayor and NTCA will:

  • manage a new investment fund grant of £600m over 30 years and determine priorities to drive economic growth
  • direct the budget for adult education services
  • have powers to acquire and dispose of land to deliver houses, commercial spaces and infrastructure
  • establish a statutory joint committee with the NTCA and the non-mayoral North East Combined Authority to continue with current arrangements for transport

The NTCA is the eighth devolution deal.

"The North of Tyne deal means that powers, budgets and responsibilities will be passed
down from central government to a new directly elected mayor in the North of Tyne area."
