There could be an increase in the cost of care claims, but a decrease in the cost of accommodation claims

The cost of care claims on higher value cases rose in 2022. With a limited number of carers and upward pressure on hourly rates (in part fuelled by the cost of living crisis) this trend is likely to continue into 2023.
There may be regional disparities, for example, where carers have to be sourced from ‘out of area’ increasing the hourly rate further by additional travel costs.
Conversely, if there is a downturn in the property market, as some commentators predict, the cost of accommodation claims may reduce.
Insurers will also need to consider the impact of inflation on existing reserves.
