Trainee GP saved from deportation
17/04/18At a time when we desperately need more GPs, I welcome the decision of the Home Office to withdraw it's appeal to deport Singaporean GP trainee, Dr Ong, who has lived in the UK for 10 years, and is 5 months away from qualifying as a GP.
Dr Ong was refused the right to remain in England as his application was 18 days late, which the BMA describe as "an honest oversight". Dr Ong won his appeal although the Home Office challenged this. The Home Office has applied to withdraw it's appeal and will reconsider Dr Ong's application for indefinite leave to remain.
Like the case of Dr Bawa-Garba, this is another example of a case where the public and medical community's strong reaction has influenced the legal process.
The Home Office has backed off trying to deport a Singaporean doctor who has lived in the UK years for 10 years and is five months from qualifying as a GP.
