Experience
Hanne is a Principal Associate, Barrister in the Regulatory team. Following her call to the Bar in 2002, she practised as a criminal practitioner at 2 Hare Court before moving to a variety of different advocacy roles.
Hanne worked in New York for the UK Mission to the UN as a Senior Policy Adviser on protection of civilians and the Women, Peace and Security portfolio within the Security Council. On her return to the UK, Hanne was Executive Director of Rights and Security International.
Hanne then went on to become a law lecturer and Deputy Head of the law school at BPP University, Holborn Campus. Hanne has worked in-house in the Presenting Unit at the Independent Office for Police Conduct on high profile and sensitive police regulation cases (2022-2024).
Expertise
Hanne has a strong background in criminal law, having prosecuted and defended in a wide variety of cases. She has dealt with challenging cases in police regulation and sits on the independent decision-making panel of the Bar Standards Board, making decisions about cases that may require disciplinary action against barristers or those regulated.
This compliments her work for the Solicitors Regulation Authority, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and other regulatory bodies.
Notable Projects
- R (McMahon) v Independent Office for Police Conduct [2024] EWHC 556 (Admin) – instructed by the IOPC - successfully resisted an application for judicial review by a litigant in person after the IOPC concluded that Greater Manchester Police’s investigation into the death of her niece was reasonable and proportionate
- RCVS v Lesolle – August 2024 – instructed by the RCVS. The RCVS Disciplinary Committee directed that a Staffordshire-based veterinary surgeon be removed from the Register of Veterinary Surgeons after it found proved a number of dishonest and misleading failings relating to his certification of veterinary export health certificates (EHCs)
