Head of Private Health and Social Care, Partner

Ian leads Capsticks’ national Advisory Team, is Head of Private Health and Social Care and the Training Principal for Capsticks. Ian advises health, housing and social care clients on a wide range of legal issues relating to the regulation of providers and the care and treatment of individuals.

Ian supports clients through complex and sensitive matters such as inquests, inquiries, serious incidents and police investigations. He also frequently advises clients on confidentiality, data protection, mental health and mental capacity law and safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.

Ian is highly regarded by Chief Executives and Boards for the advice and support he offers on Care Quality Commission regulation. Ian has supported over 150 registered providers nationally on regulatory issues arising from CQC inspections and enforcement, including successful appeals to the First Tier Tribunal and challenges to proposed enforcement action such as conditions and suspension of registration.


Notable Projects
  • Advising on the scope of CQC registration for innovative developments in healthcare such as insourcing arrangements and A.I. powered diagnostic tools.
  • Supporting numerous NHS Trusts nationally in relation to the CQC’s national maternity inspection programme, helping to challenge inaccurate reports and secure improved ratings and also sharing themes and trends with clients facing inspection.
  • Supporting international providers of healthcare to set up and deliver healthcare in the U.K. including the provision of ongoing support on legal issues such as Data Protection, Practising Privileges, medicines and CQC regulation.
  • Designing and delivering a bespoke programme of training for a client to increase awareness of, and compliance with, the Duty of Candour.
