Matthew is a construction lawyer with over 15 years’ experience in dispute avoidance and resolution. Matthew acts for local authorities, NHS bodies, developers, contractors, consultants and funders across a broad range of projects in both public and private sectors, including healthcare, leisure, commercial and residential developments and energy from waste projects.
He has a particular interest in the law and practice of construction adjudication.
Notable Projects
- Advising on claims relating to allegedly deficient wind loading calculations as part of a complex roof design at an Energy from Waste facility in Cornwall.
- Advising a London Borough on a contractor’s financial claims relating to alleged compensation events.
- Acting for a local authority in the successful defence of a final account adjudication. The majority of the contractor’s claims were dismissed.
- Acting for a leading international designer and manufacturer of automated supply chain solutions in a series of adjudications commenced by a sub-contractor concerning disputes over payment, defects and extensions of time.
- Advising a registered provider on the validity of a Default Notice that was incorrectly served by the developer on a £500m residential development and securing its withdrawal.
- Providing strategic advice on potential claims arising under a series of agreements for the design, development and installation of energy saving technologies and measures across a hospital estate.
- Representing a local authority in a number of claims concerning architectural, mechanical and electrical defects at a regional leisure centre. The value of remedial works was over £30m.
- Fire Safety - providing strategic and legal advice on claims relating to external cladding design.
- Advised on a £10m+ defects claim concerning design and installation defects in heavy duty port pavement.
