Experience
Alastair qualified as a Solicitor in 2022 after training at a leading firm, and has spent his time since then advising on a full range of issues areas within Information Law. He advises on data protection matters, common law confidentiality, and more general ad hoc information sharing queries, with a particular focus on the health sector. He works with NHS Trusts, ICBs and other healthcare organisations, local councils, regulators and other types of public or third sector bodies.
He also advises frequently on FOI matters, including disclosure, ICO complaints, Tribunal appeals, and more systemic matters such as FOI policy development/team training.
Expertise
Alastair’s expertise covers a range of issues, including AI development and international data transfers, internal data protection compliance, data breach triaging, and the use of personal data in research. Before joining Capsticks, Alastair advised a leading national data research body on compliance issues, private-public sector healthcare partnership organisations on the use of personal data, multinational corporations and some of the country’s largest local authorities. His work includes:
- Secondment to a top national data research institution to advise on personal data compliance.
- Advising a local authority on the commissioning of an AI system
- Advising on national procurement project involving very large-scale use of stakeholder data.
- Appeal of FOI decision notice to the First Tier Tribunal regarding disclosure of a commercial supplier’s contract
- Data protection and complex SAR assistance during an employment dispute at a large local authority involving senior staff.
CSR Activity
Alastair has previously walked the Three Peaks in aid of Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.
