Experience
Gareth is a Senior Associate in the health advisory team having joined us from a national firm where he worked in a similar role. Gareth’s previous experience since qualifying as a solicitor is wide ranging and includes the practice areas of mental health and immigration.
Expertise
- Gareth has extensive experience advising on the Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, judicial review and commissioning disputes and his work includes:
- Welfare applications in the Court of Protection under s.16 and s.21A Mental Capacity Act.
- DoL in hospital cases, including representing acute Trusts in urgent applications to authorise the deprivation of liberty of children and adolescents placed in acute hospitals due to the shortage of appropriate placements in the community. • Complex discharge cases. • Treatment cases, including urgent and obstetric applications.
- Commissioning issues, particularly CHC.
- Representing acute Trusts and ICBs to respond to complex judicial review claims including one that went to the Divisional Court.
- Representing ICBs in respect of complex and high value restitution claims (CHC, s.117).
- COPDOL11 applications.
Gareth regularly delivers training to clients on key aspects of the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act.

CSR activity
Gareth is currently involved in mentoring high school students. Previously he has volunteered with a charity to assist homeless people in Manchester, worked pro bono as a supervising solicitor on debt/housing matters guiding students at The School of Law Advice Clinic of The University of Leeds and provided pro bono advice on asylum/human rights immigration appeals with The Manuel Bravo Project in Leeds.
